Timon's Directive for Living
|
". . . for I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me . . . Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?" I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of these brothers of mine, you did for me."

Timon's Ministries Overview |
Timon’s Ministries is a day resource center serving the Flour Bluff Community and the Island. Organized and incorporated by a group of churches in 1999 Timon’s opened for business in 2000. Serving a hot meal 6 days a week, Timon’s averages between 80-100 lunches daily. TWENTY PERCENT OF OUR CLIENTS ARE HOMELESS, THE REST ARE THE WORKING/NON WORKING POOR.
The Crisis Pantry which distributes groceries to low/ no income families distributes 44.5 tons of food to the community each year.. We estimate increased clients in 2010 in our Crisis Pantry-and an increase over the 370+ dependant children currently served.
Working with the school, we provided backpacks and school supplies to over 200 dependants from our Crisis Pantry. We provide eye clinics annually that include the complete exam and free eyewear. Our goal is to increase the number of clinics after securing additional eye care equipment so the volunteer doctors do not have to bring to each session.
Timon’s overall goal is to help people get back into the mainstream with dignity. To that end, we pay for birth certificates, ID’s, and drivers licenses. We do GED pre testing and fund GED tests. We have supplied scholarship monies in conjunction with a local service club that enabled one of our clients to attend Del Mar. We now drug test all requests for financial assistance. In 2004 we initiated a Job Skills bank so that we can help our clients find work.
We are ever mindful of being good stewards of the funding from our community. We have partnered with Weed and Seed and will be a Safe Haven as a drug free environment. Computer classes are conducted on site and are free to anyone in the community. Free tax preparation is offered each spring.
With a limited staff of one executive director a part time clerical and part time dishwasher, volunteers dedicated over 18,000 hours in 2009 cooking, serving, working with the Crisis Pantry and helping clients with bureaucratic red tape ie; social security, Medicare, doctor’s visits, etc. Volunteers also were responsible for the buildout of the dental clinic.
We opened our dental clinic in April, 2009, completely staffed with volunteers from the community. Good dental hygiene is vital for good overall health and a luxury our people can ill afford. From April thru Dec, ‘09, 506 procedures were executed on 469 patients. Volunteers logged over 1200 hours. Timon’s spent $650 on meds for these patients.
Timon’s is dependant on sustaining funds from churches, individuals, and organizations. Over 50% of our funding comes from grants and one annual fundraiser. With monthly expenses of over $18,000 and a soft economy, Timon’s struggles to meet the growing demand.
